Top OKC Metro Parks with Shade for Hot Summer Days

Parks with shade. In my experience, hot summer days and parks can be the best and the worst of times. It’s the best of times for my children and usually the worst of times for me. I need parks in my life that have plenty of shade to protect my “heat-itude” and allow my kids to exhaust themselves to the point that they no longer have energy to argue amongst one another.

I know I cannot be the only mom out there who grumbles at the thought of the park. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing my children’s faces light up with both joy and the glimmer of beading sweat dripping from their brows; however, I am not about that life. So, I have taken on the mighty task of finding parks in the OKC metro that will be a win for everyone. Throw me all the shade!

With prices skyrocketing and summer in the air, we are all looking for inexpensive ways to entertain and get that energy out. Parks are the perfect place to get energy out, have playdates, and even meet other OKC moms. So here is a list that will give you a head start on a comfortable activity in the Oklahoma sun.

Dewey Park (OKC)

Not far from our state capital, this new park is spread out over four acres of land. With equipment not just for kids, but adults as well, this is a top-of-the-line family park. Not only are there pavilions to provide shade, giant flower sunscreens are scattered throughout to hide you from that Oklahoma sun.

Mineral Wells (Guthrie)

This may be the best-kept secret in my opinion. Not only does this place have shade, but it has everything! Playparks, basketball courts, pavilions, splash pads. This place would be great for families like mine, where your children have a very diverse age range. Pack a lunch, and take a road trip to this peaceful and foliage-filled slice of Oklahoma heaven.

Scissortail Park (S OKC)

You cannot mention parks without mentioning an Oklahoma staple. With skate parks, splash pads, pop-up events, and so much more, Scissortail Park is, in my opinion, one of the most well-known and active parks in our city. In sum, there is never a lack of free family events. And did I mention, there is shade everywhere! If you haven’t visited this OKC staple, it may be worth adding to your summer bucket list.

Bakers Kiwanis Park (Warr Acres)

If you aren’t one for a crowd, this park could be your favorite! It may not be large, but it definitely has shade. Tucked away from any main streets, this could bring you both shade and peace. You can relax and never lose sight of your child.

Lions Children’s Playground (OKC)

Sitting right on Lake Hefner, this playground not only has shade, but it also has the sweet breeze from the lake. Enjoy the views of the water with a good book and snack, while your children voluntarily play in the blazing sun. If you have older kids, there are bike trails surrounding the lake. If the kids are happy, we are happy!

Freedom Trail Park (Yukon)

Located near Chisolm Creek Park, Freedom Trail has a lot to offer. Sunshades over equipment, seating, and a large playground. We also cannot forget about the magic that is trees. We may hate the allergies, but we cannot deny the sanity-saving amount of shade they provide. If you are in the Yukon area and want to explore, this could be a spot for you. Did I mention there is a community pool just up the road? I’d call that a win.

Bethany All Abilities Playground (Bethany)

Located next to the Bethany Public Library, this park offers shade and an inclusive playground with equipment for children of all stages in life. Children of all ages can enjoy this gated park.

Kids Space Park (Shawnee)

With shade, seating, and every court imaginable . . . this could be an all-day adventure. This park has a very modern feel and happens to be one of the top five largest parks in Oklahoma. Don’t even get me started on the glorious escapes from the tortures of the Oklahoma sun. This is another one I will be putting on my to-do list.

The Gathering Place (Tulsa)

If you are feeling up for a road trip, this could be worth the drive. This park is like nothing I have ever seen before. The size, the activities, and the SHADE! This place has seating everywhere, concessions, and even live entertainment. There is no shortage of bathrooms and something for the entire family to do. This park is an all-ages experience and could be worth the trip for you!

Stars and Stripes Park (OKC)

If you are looking for a long-loved and classic park, this could be more up your alley. The park has lots of foliage for shade.  Sitting right on Lake Hefner, you get to benefit from the breeze from the open water. Stars and Stripes also has a Stars and Stripes skatepark, so it is versatile for families with different interests.

These are only a few of the parks Oklahoma has to offer. Shade varies, but memories will be made. Also, never be ashamed to travel with portable fans. They have become an essential in my mommy bag.
