Where to Find Swim Lessons in the OKC Metro

Let’s dive in, families! I have prioritized swim lessons since my son was one year old, and we are now in our fourth year of swimming lessons. During my years poolside, I have picked up a few pointers.

Swim Lessons

Tip 1: Most instructors allow you to jump in the pool with them. Many encourage it! For my kids, just me getting in the water those first couple of days when they were a year old was all it took for them to warm up to the pool.

Tip 2: I have found some really great group lessons offered at affordable rates here in Norman at the Westwood Aquatic Center and the Young Family Athletic Center, both through the City of Norman. I have also heard that OU does some really great group classes.

Tip 3: If private lessons are a priority to you, I would say dive into your community pages on social media for neighbors who are lifeguard and swim instructor certified, or see who has been recommended within those groups before.

Tip 4: Some instructors I have used do ask the kids to wear goggles, and others find them to be a distraction or hindrance to the lesson. After tightening and loosening them numerous times in 30 minutes, I personally say forget the goggles, ha! But, ask your child’s teacher ahead of time.

Tip 5: A light snack and sunscreen application 30 min prior to leaving the house are a must!

Christin Snowden

Christin Snowden is a wife and mom of 3. She has been a geriatric speech language pathologist most of the last decade, but is now staying at home raising her babies to love God and love others well. Christin moved from Missouri to Oklahoma after marrying in 2021, “following the horses” so she says. Her husband is a board certified equine surgeon and this area is exactly what he needed to thrive in practice. As skeptical as she was when first moving to Oklahoma, now no one is more excited to say they are an Okie than Christin. The people here have been so unbelievably genuine and kind, she truly feels there’s no better place to live and raise her babies. She was so convinced of this she even talked her brother into moving here too! Having kids close in age, one baby in 2022, another 13 months later in 2023, and a third in 2025 can have its challenges, but she looks forward to sharing about her experiences here, providing helpful insight, and learning even more about the wonderful area we call home.
