My daughter hasn’t even started pre-K yet . . . but it’s already such a big milestone in our home.
We’re still in the “getting ready” stage, like buying school supplies, practicing independence, coordinating drop-off/pick-up plans, and slowly figuring out what this next season of life is going to look like. As a first-time mom sending my baby into school for the very first time, I’ve quickly found that preparation is about a lot more than just school supplies.
Where We Are Right Now
Right now is probably the most exciting (and a tiny bit overwhelming) time. I just received the school supply list, and there’s nothing I love more than taking my daughter shopping! She just can’t wait to pick out her very first big-girl backpack. Even though she’s not in the classroom yet, we have already begun preparing for it in everyday life.
Mornings have been an easy adjustment because she already goes to daycare. However, I have been making sure to practice simple independence skills. Things like picking out her outfits or putting her shoes on. I’ve learned that preparing for school doesn’t require us to change our routines completely; it’s building readiness inside the everyday moments that we already have.
Another thing we do is talk about school! I don’t make it a scary thing. I talk about the new friends she will make, the new things she will learn, and even about what she wants to be when she grows up. Now, she asks me every day if it’s time to go to pre-K yet.

Local Things That Have Helped Us Prepare
It can be super helpful to get familiar with your actual local environment and not just the concept of school.
A really easy place to start is always your local library system. Many libraries in the OKC Metro host regular story time programs for pre-school-aged kids, which can be a really gentle introduction to structured group time. It’s honestly pretty simple, but it mirrors a lot of what pre-K will feel like. If you don’t know what your local library has to offer, you can look up upcoming events within the Metropolitan Library System.
We’ve also been to the Science Museum Oklahoma, which is an oldie but a goodie. If you haven’t been lately, they’ve done SO many updates. They have a ton of hands-on exhibits designed specifically for younger kids, which helps with curiosity, following directions, and being around other children in an engaging space. Even short visits there can be a good bridge between home and school.
Another thing that I didn’t think about at first was simply getting familiar with the school environment itself. Since we live so close to the school, we drive by it frequently. We talk about how that’s the big kid school that she gets to go to soon, and we drive by the pick-up/drop-off area so that we are prepared when it comes to the first day. It’s something really small, but it makes a big difference when everything else about school will be so new.

A Simple Pre-K Readiness Checklist (What I’m Focusing on Right Now)
☐ Build consistent morning and bedtime routines. You need to practice getting up early too!
☐ Practice independence. Getting dressed, putting on shoes, and going to the bathroom by themselves are must-have skills for school.
☐ Introduce simple responsibility, like following directions and completing small tasks without reminders.
☐ Talk about school in a calm and positive manner. Don’t make it overwhelming!
☐ Get familiar with local environments like libraries, playgrounds, and school surroundings.
☐ Practice recognizing and saying important personal information like their first and last name.
☐ Work on social readiness, like sharing, taking turns, and waiting.
☐ Prepare yourself emotionally to step back, trust the process, and allow your child to grow in a new place.
Before It All Begins . . .
There isn’t one “right” way to prepare for pre-K. It’s not about checking every box perfectly. Make small habits, simple routines, and slowly help both your child and yourself adjust to what’s next. We’re still preparing, still learning, and still figuring things out! From one mom to another, here’s to new beginnings!
