5 Beautiful Kid-Friendly Campsites Within 2 Hours of OKC

The first time I took my daughter camping, I packed literally everything except the things that actually mattered. We had extra outfits, five different snacks, and somehow I forgot the toys and activities to keep her entertained. By dinner time, we had spilled her juice all over her, she was eating crushed goldfish from the car, and bouncing all over the air mattress.

But aside from all the chaos, we still had so much fun!

I learned that camping with kids is a lot less about being “outdoorsy” and way more about finding places that make life easier on parents (and kids). Good bathrooms matter, easy walking trails matter, being close enough to civilization so that you can panic-buy more wipes . . . matters!

If you’re looking for kid-friendly camping spots within two hours of the OKC Metro that actually feel manageable with littles, these are some of my favorites!

Lake Murray State Park (Ardmore, OK)

Lake Murray is one of those places that makes you feel like you actually planned a good family trip instead of just throwing camping gear into your trunk and hoping for the best.

The water is beautiful, there’s plenty of space for kiddos to run around, and it feels family-friendly without feeling crowded. There’s enough to do during the day that bedtime usually goes a lot smoother. Nothing wears kids out faster than swimming, dirt, and fresh air!

And if you’re not fully committed to the true camping experience, they have cabins! I FULLY support because sometimes motherhood in itself is enough survival mode.

Lake Thunderbird State Park (Norman, OK)

Okay, this one is perfect if you want the camping experience without driving halfway across Oklahoma.

As a mom, there’s just something so comforting about knowing that if my daughter decides at 2 a.m. that camping is the worst thing ever, we can go home. Lake Thunderbird feels easy. It’s close, familiar, and doesn’t require a ton of planning.

I think this is one of the best spots for first-time camping with kids because it’s still technically a “getaway” without the unnecessary stress.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (Lawton, OK)

THIS is going to be the campsite that makes your kids feel like they are actually on an adventure.

Seeing bison in real life is one of those things that feels exciting no matter how old you are. The mountains, the trails, the wildlife; it all feels so much more exciting than your average campground.

I will say, this one is better if your kids like exploring and staying busy because there’s so much to see! If your child is the type to pick up random rocks and ask a million questions about bugs (I know mine is this way), they’ll probably love it.

Roman Nose State Park (Watonga, OK)

Now this one is a step down from Lake Thunderbird. Roman Nose feels quieter and less chaotic than some of the bigger parks, which can be a huge plus if you have littles.

I love places that are easy to navigate because once you become a momma, every outing starts feeling like you’re a certified event planner. This park has the pretty views, the easy trails, and enough activities to keep kids busy without the overwhelming feeling.

Another plus, the swimming pool during the summer! Absolutely worth mentioning. Sometimes camping as a family is less about connecting with nature and more about finding ways to avoid hearing the “I’m bored” every 5 minutes.

Greenleaf State Park (Braggs, OK)

Greenleaf was actually the first place I ever took my daughter camping, so this one will always be special (and a major lesson was learned).

I remember packing basically my entire house and stressing about every little thing, but she was perfectly entertained playing with worms, eating all the snacks, and playing in the tent. It ended up feeling like such a perfect camping spot because it was still so peaceful without feeling too remote. Bathrooms nearby, lake view, camp fire? Perfect.

The calm lake and good fishing easily made it feel less overwhelming. It’s also a great option if you want the camping experience without fully roughing it.

Camping with kids is almost never fully relaxing! Someone’s going to play in the dirt immediately, someone is going to cry several times, and you’ll spend half the trip saying things like “Why is your sock wet?” and “Please stop licking that.”

But those are always the trips that are worth remembering the most because they will never be this little again!

They’re going to remember the flashlight walks, sticky marshmallows, and falling asleep under the stars. Happy camping!
