Summer Reading Programs in the OKC Metro

Who else remembers reading her little heart out to get a personal pan pizza? Ah, those were the days! I could pass many an hour in my treehouse with a stack of Babysitters Club books and a reading log.

Let’s give those sweet summer memories to our kids. Thankfully, Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas have loads of incentives and rewards to keep our kids reading all summer long.

We’d like to thank Rose State College for sponsoring this Guide to Summer Reading.

Rose State Kid’s College offers engaging, hands-on programs designed to spark curiosity and creativity in children of all ages. Best known for its exciting summer camps, Kid’s College provides a safe and welcoming environment where kids can explore a variety of subjects—from STEM and art to leadership and career exploration. Throughout the year, additional opportunities like Parents’ Night Out give families flexible options for fun, structured experiences outside of the summer season. Each program is led by experienced instructors who are passionate about making learning interactive, meaningful, and fun. Kid’s College is committed to helping students build confidence, develop new skills, and create lasting memories in an encouraging setting. Guide to Summer Reading

Without further ado, here’s a list of local summer reading programs to entice our kids to stop the summer slide and keep them busy for a hot minute. Who’s stopping you from enrolling in them all?

Adventure Begins at the Library | Metropolitan Library System

Every summer for more than eighty years, the Metropolitan Library System has offered a Summer Reading program to keep kids and their families reading all summer long. Summer Reading is a community tradition that promotes reading for fun and lifelong enrichment and prevents the summer slide. Sign up on the library’s website. Then log your hours to earn badges and prizes.

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program

Barnes & Noble hopes to foster a love of reading and its rewards through their Summer Reading Program. Download the summer reading journal from the Barnes & Noble website, read 8 books over the course of the summer, and record your reading in the journal. Then bring in completed journals to your closest Barnes & Noble store to earn free books!

OKC Comets Reading Challenge

Read OKC Summer Reading Challenge

ReadOKC Reading Challenges are hosted each school break, encouraging students to read at least 20 minutes every day. Since 2017, OKCPS students have logged over 46 million minutes and over 71,000 students have met the challenge goal. Get all the details on their website.

Scholastic Summer Reading Home Base

The Scholastic Summer Reading program offers kids an exciting, free, and safe summer reading experience. During the summer, kids can visit the summer zone in Scholastic Home Base, a completely free digital destination that offers stories, characters, games, and a community of readers. Kids will be able to track their summer reading by reading every day and maintaining a Reading Streak™ in Home Base. The longer a child extends their Reading Streak™, the more digital experiences they earn!

Summer Learning Challenge | Pioneer Library System

Earn prizes, collect badges, and help our community spend 15 million minutes learning this summer! All ages are encouraged to participate in the Summer Learning Challenge by logging reading time and fun learning activities to earn 1,000 points. Visit the library to collect your summer prizes for every point badge you earn!

Thunder Reading Challenge

Open up a world of knowledge for your student with the Thunder Reading Challenge, presented by American Fidelity Assurance Company. The challenge is simple: encourage your kindergarten through fifth-grade student to read 20 minutes each day, or 600 minutes total in June, for a chance to win a Thunder prize pack and be eligible to win a Thunder jersey!
