I Miss my Kids When They Sleep…and Other Weird Parts of Motherhood

You know what’s weird? Motherhood.

It’s the most joyous, beautiful, overwhelming, exhausting, and exciting job you’ll ever have.

But let’s be honest. Motherhood is weird. Let’s talk about why:

  1. You miss your kids when they’re asleep. You spend all day wearing them out with fun activities to make sure they’re good and tired for nap/bedtime, and then minutes after they’re asleep you find yourself wishing you could lay with them and snuggle them a little longer.
  2. You’re proud of things like poop. You used to be proud of a new work promotion or for hitting a milestone with your own health and fitness. Now, your heart swells with pride when your tiny human uses a tiny potty on their own.
  3. Vacations aren’t what they used to be. Most people think of trips to the beach or the mountains as a dream vacation. Moms enjoy those sweet 30 seconds they get to spend with themselves in peace and quiet after they buckle their screaming children into the car and have to walk around to the driver’s door.
  4. You’re parenting a mini version of yourself. You have an attitude with your child about why they aren’t doing what they’re supposed to be doing, and then get upset because they have an attitude about you having an attitude. Over and over until you die.

All joking aside, parenting is the greatest job we will ever have. It’s equal parts having the most fun with our kids and anxiety wondering if we are doing a good enough job. It’s picking apart every aspect of how we raise them and comparing ourselves to other moms on social media. It’s expecting them to enjoy the dinners we spend hours preparing, only to toss frozen chicken nuggets on a plate just so they will eat something.

Motherhood is a lot of things. But it’s definitely weird. And that’s what makes it the best, most unique job on the planet.
