10 Fall Traditions to Start with Your Family in OKC this Year

Not to be dramatic, but I live for the holidays. Once September 1st rolls around, my house looks like a cross between a pumpkin patch and Halloween-town. I’m also quite big on family traditions. My family has dozens of traditions (some from our families of origin and some we’ve built ourselves!), especially around the holidays. Here’s some of our favorites!

10 Fall Family Traditions to Start This Year:

  1. Visit your local pumpkin patch! When we moved to OKC a year ago, it was the beginning of fall, so I searched for many pumpkin patches for us to visit! Now we’ve checked out several, but our favorites include Orr Family Farm and Parkhurst Pumpkin Patch
  2. State Fair Of Oklahoma. We went for the first time last year and had so much fun! We had tickets to Disney On Ice, so we went to that and then rode on rides after. Definitely a family-favorite tradition!
  3. Haunt The Zoo. We had a version of this at our zoo in our hometown in Texas, and we’ve gone every year since my daughter was a baby. I was so excited when I found out that the Oklahoma City Zoo had one as well! Dress your kids up and let them go trick-or-treating all through the zoo – October 7-29! Also, there are countless photo opportunities and thousands of pumpkins!
  4. Paint or carve pumpkins! Our family always used to carve pumpkins; however, we have been more interested in painting pumpkins recently. With two young kids, painting allows them to be more involved with the pumpkin-decorating! Either way, it’s fun and festive!
  5. Bake pumpkin bread. It’s not Fall without aaaallll the pumpkin foods! My favorite pumpkin bread to buy is the mix from Trader Joe’s. Need more pumpkin this Fall? We also love to bake the Pillsbury holiday sugar cookies.
  6. Visit Myriad Gardens. Grab your pumpkin spice latte and stroll through the gardens and thousands of pumpkins this fall season. There’s no time to visit Myriad Gardens quite like Pumpkinville – participate in daily crafts, face-painting, story times and more with a backdrop of over 30,000 pumpkins and gourds!
  7. Attend a local football game. Friday night lights is a fall staple, especially if you’re from Oklahoma (or Texas, like us!). There is something so fun about school spirit and cheering on your favorite team once the weather starts to cool off! Whether high school or college, don your favorite team’s gear and head to the football field!
  8. Go on a hayride. Many pumpkin patches offer hayrides that are a must-do!
  9. Decorate cookies. We use the Pillsbury sugar cookie dough, cut the cookies into some fun shapes, and then decorate with cream cheese icing and sprinkles. However, you can also buy pre-made cookie kits now!
  10. Dress up and go trick-or-treating, or visit your local fall festival. Growing up, we always went to our local fall festival on Halloween. It has always been one of my favorite family traditions, so we’ve continued this tradition with our kids. My daughter loves trick-or-treating as well, so now we do both!

Thanks for reading along – I hope this gives you inspiration for some new family traditions to start with your family! Do you have favorite Fall traditions that you’d love to share? Let us know in the comments!
