Million Dollar Playground Makeover – Have You Heard?!?

Playground makeoverOur family loves going to parks. In fact, we’ve made it somewhat of a mission to find the best playgrounds in every town we call home. When we moved here from Florida, the one park I didn’t really love also happened to be the closest one to where we live: Freedom Trail Park in Yukon. It was just a little run-down compared to so many of the other fantastic parks around OKC. But I recently heard some great news: Freedom Trail Park is getting a major (to the tune of $1.2 million) facelift! And we’ve got all the details here for you!

The new playground at Freedom Trail Park is going to be epic! I interviewed Claudia Krshka, Parks Maintenance Director for the City of Yukon, and I’m so excited to share what I learned! Claudia says this playground will be totally inclusive, with play elements for children from 2-12 years old. The city is working with PDG of Tulsa to design and build the playground, which will be similar to one they’re renovating in Owasso called Funtastic Island. The renderings I’ve seen of that park look amazing!

When I heard there would also be a splash pad, that really got my attention. Yukon has another fantastic splash pad at Sunrise Park, but adding a brand new one to enjoy will be wonderful.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about this playground and splash pad is that the play surface will use both pour-in-place rubber and synthetic grass, which will make the playground so much more accessible for wheelchairs and strollers than the current playground. There will also be lots of new seating and shade, making the park much more functional.

The current Freedom Trail playground closed on May 23, with demolition scheduled to happen soon. Construction will begin this fall with a completion date of Spring 2023!

If you’re in Yukon while the construction is happening, the city is encouraging families to visit their other two playgrounds. Our family’s current favorite in town is Ranchwood Playground! We also love Bethany All-Abilities Park and Piedmont Community Park, and neither one is too far away!
