Gen Z, Gen Z, What do You Really See?

Gen Z, Gen Z, What do you See?
I see moms in skinny jeans walking towards me.

Gen Z, Gen Z, What do you See?
I see moms with side parts smiling at me.

Gen Z, Gen Z, What do you see?
I see too many cry-laughing emojis being texted to me.

Millennial Mom, Millennial Mom, What do you see?
I see young girls on tik tok making fun of me.

Milennial Mom, Millennial Mom, What do you See?
I see girls with scrunchies on their wrists mocking me.

Milennial Mom, Milennial Mom, What do you See?
I see chicks wearing Little House on the Prairie dresses laughing at ME?!

Gen Z, Gen Z, here’s what you don’t realize that you see:

You see moms who have birthed multiple children whose bodies don’t quite fit the mold that is low rise jeans anymore.

You see moms who don’t get much sleep at night and work hard all day so the extra “volume” we get from the side part helps take away from how tired we look and helps disguise just how much dry shampoo is in our hair.

You see moms who likely don’t get to spend as much time with our friends as we’d like to, so we tend to overly express our feelings via laugh-cry emojis in texts because we can’t accurately express them in person whenever we’d like.

You see moms who likely don’t give much thought to what they’re wearing because they’re changing diapers, keeping up household duties, working either from the house or outside of the home, doing daycare/school drop-offs, assisting with virtual school, trying to maintain some sort of social life and then hoping for 15 minutes to themselves after their kids go to bed to have adult conversations with their spouses, only to be interrupted by a child who won’t stay in bed and dishes that need to be done and then they do it all over again every day until they become real-life versions of laugh-cry emojis – smiling through the exhaustion of the most challenging and wonderful job we will ever know – motherhood.

And you know what, Gen Z? Someday you’ll be here too. And the young girls on whatever social platform exists in 10 years will be making fun of your flat middle parts, your bell bottom jeans (you know your grandmas wore those, right?) and mocking you for coining the term “oof” – but go ahead and have your fun at the expense of us millennial moms – I assure you none of us are truly offended.

We wear our comfy jeans and side parts as a badge of honor – it’s how we make friends with other moms at the park. We are proud that our appearances allow you to spot us from a mile away. And I’m sure we’d love to come up with some funny “old tok” videos mocking you, but we’re all too tired. Good night.
