Downward Dog to Uptown Girl: 3 Ways to Transform Your Yoga Pants

As a Style Coach, the #1 comment I hear from moms is, “I wear yoga pants everyday and don’t have time to look cute” or “Yoga pants are so easy and comfortable and I just don’t have time to care anymore.”

Yoga pants can be made into a pulled together outfit with a few simple key items. After a style coach appointment has ended and I have finished putting together outfits from 5 different pairs of favorite black yoga pants and 4 favorite Target t-shirts that have the perfect amount of softness from the many times it’s been washed from all the baby spit up, spaghetti sauce stains, handprints with paint on them, etc., moms are pleasantly surprised that they have such cute stuff in their closet.

All moms want to look good and feel good, BUT want to be comfortable without a lot of effort or time taken out of their already busy lifestyle. Let’s be honest, what stay at home or working mom has time for all that?

Here are 3 tips that I hope inspire you to look in your closet and put together some “Yoga Pant Outfits”.

Tip #1

Roll up or cuff the bottom of your yoga pants/leggings. Cuffing the bottom of your yoga pants makes a big difference when you wear sandals and flats. Think Audrey Hepburn, but with yoga pants on (this doesn’t work with boot cut.) When you cuff them I have found that two “rolls” work great, and it’s especially helpful for those of us that are 5’3 and shorter.

Tip #2

Look for long delicate necklaces to wear with your t-shirt. Adding this little piece of  jewelry makes it look like effort was put into your outfit with little effort on your part. You can find a great selection of these necklaces at Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe for $10 or less. A long delicate necklace is a great alternative to wearing a scarf. (If you’re like me, I love wearing scarves, but not in the Oklahoma summer heat!)

Tip #3

Boot cut yoga pants – The #1 piece of advice that I give moms who prefer a boot cut yoga pant is to not wear workout tennis shoes with them and to shop for t-shirts that aren’t too big/baggy or too tight/short to pair with them. I suggest to try on lots of t-shirts at Target and Old Navy in the women’s and junior’s section. T-shirts are cut differently and it’s best to try them on first; it’s worth it in the end. The best places I have found non-workout tennis shoes is: Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. (I personally wear my flat Toms, or my trusty worn in Chucks)

Here’s a great example of what would work.

I saw a meme on Pinterest that said “Motherhood: When changing from pajamas to black yoga pants qualifies as “getting dressed”.” I think we can all agree that this rings true in certain seasons of life in motherhood.

What are some ways that you have made your yoga pant “uniform” a little more fun and pulled together? I would love to hear your tips!

    • Anna – Thank you so much. I agree with you, in all the stages and seasons of life, yoga pants are crucial for every woman’s dress attire. It is funny that getting “dressed” means putting on yoga pants, but that is mom/woman life for sure.

    • Tracy – You’re welcome! I tend to advise that if you are wearing your yoga pants as an “outfit”, it’s best to wear non workout tennis shoes with it. I think it’s completely appropriate if you are leaving the gym and running errands, or going to the gym and running a few errands beforehand. BUT … most women wear them for comfort as their “outfit”. Glad you like the tips.
